Video: How to Install Open-Gear Tuners (C. B. Gitty product #31-001-01) on a Cigar Box Guitar
In this video, CBG craftsman Glenn Watt walks you through installing basic open-gear tuners on a cigar box guitar, such as C. B. Gitty’s economy tuners.
People use different thicknesses for necks, though 3/4″ is probably the most common. The tuners we sell and the ones in this vid work best with a headstock that is around 9/16″ thick, so you would have to do some sort of thinning/recessing of your 1″ thick headstock.
Thanks so much for the great tutorial! Quick question: The material I’d like to use for the neck appears to be a bit thicker than what you’re using. Most of the sticks I have are around 1 inch thick (they’re not all the same). So, what’s the maximum thickness for properly installing these tuners? If 1 inch is too thick, I suppose I’ll have to find a way to make the necks a bit thinner.
Thanks for the quick response. I appreciate the information provided and will use it on my CBG builds.

Tom, when the tuner gears are towards the body of the instrument, then as the string tension increases the two parts of the tuner gear are pulled more tightly together. If the tuners are mounted the other way, then the gears can be pulled apart as the string tension increases, leading to slippage.
Nice, informative video. Thank you. One question. At about 3:54 you note that you should always set tuners so that the gears are nearest to the bridge (versus nearest to the tail.
Is there a technical reason for this orientation (stress on the post, etc) or is it just a standard convention to ensure that all turners turn the same direction for tightening and loosening?
Thanks again for a useful presentation.
